children learning to swimLearning to swim can be quite a daunting process for the young or inexperienced, but it needn’t be – in fact, learning to swim can be incredibly fun and fulfilling. If you start your children off at a young age, you should find that they become accustomed to the water much faster. Classes are now available for children at toddler age, although some parents will start taking their children swimming as babies. It’s important to remember that as long as the lessons are conducted by trained instructors in safe swimming areas, you shouldn’t have anything to fear.

 

Once children have become accustomed to swimming it may be difficult to get them out of the water! Most children will at least like playing in the shallows, and the majority of them will want to undertake increasingly daring manoeuvres – such as diving to the bottom, doing back-flips, or even doing hand-stands under water. It’s important that you encourage your children to continue with their swimming lessons, as you never know when their skills may come in handy – or even save a life.

 

If you are learning to swim yourself, it’s important that you take the time to allow yourself to adjust to the sensation of putting your face in water, opening your eyes under water, and then completely submerging your body whilst holding your breath. These are the biggest challenges, and once you’ve defeated your fears you should be well on your way to becoming the next swimming sensation. Learning to float and learn the basic strokes of freestyle and breaststroke will also be immeasurably helpful.
